# Phone numbers

> Connect a carrier and point numbers at your assistants.

Qall doesn't sell phone numbers. You connect the carrier you already use, and Qall
manages the numbers you choose.

See [Connect a phone number](/connect-a-phone-number) for the short version. This
page is the detail.

## Twilio

Enter your Account SID and auth token. Qall creates the trunk, then shows the
numbers on the account so you can pick which ones it should manage.

Twilio owns that list, so Qall re-checks it periodically and keeps your numbers in
step. **Sync now** does it immediately if you've just bought a number.

## Any SIP carrier

| Field | What it is |
| - | - |
| **Gateway host** | Your carrier's hostname or IP. |
| **Port** | Usually 5060. |
| **Username and password** | The trunk credentials your carrier gave you. |
| **Outbound identity** | The user and domain to present when calling out. Defaults to your username and gateway. |
| **Accept inbound calls** | Turn on to receive calls on this trunk. |
| **Carrier IP ranges** | The addresses your carrier calls from. |
| **Inbound numbers** | The numbers to accept. |
| **Register with the carrier** | Turn on if your carrier expects a registration, and fill in the server, username and realm. |
| **Require E.164** | Insist on numbers in `+country` format. |

Values are checked before anything is saved. If one is rejected, the field is
named and nothing is written — fix it and save again.

### If a connection isn't ready

Saving a trunk and setting it up are two steps, so a connection can be saved but
not yet live. Each one shows its state:

| | |
| - | - |
| **Ready** | Working. |
| **Waiting for numbers** | Nothing wrong — pick which numbers to manage. |
| **Incomplete** | Setup didn't finish. It lists what's missing. |

**Set up again** retries. It's safe to run repeatedly — it only fills in what's
missing.

## Assigning numbers

Assign a number to the assistant that should answer it. One number answers with
one assistant; an assistant can have several numbers.

Unassign a number and it stops being answered.

## Calling out

Outbound calls need a number to call *from*. Any managed number works, and
[campaigns](/campaigns) and warm
[transfers](/tools/call-transfers) both need one.
