# Recording and consent

> What gets recorded, and how to ask before you do.

Calls are recorded by default. Each one produces a single audio file of both
sides, which you can play or download from the [call](/calls).

Recordings are only reachable by people signed in to your organisation. A
recording link isn't public.

## Asking first

Turn on **ask for consent** in the assistant's recording settings and the
assistant asks before recording starts. Nothing is recorded until the caller
agrees.

The caller can answer two ways, and whichever lands first is the answer:

* **Out loud** — "yes" or "no", in their own words.
* **On the keypad** — **1** to agree, **2** to decline.

The keypad option matters more than it sounds. On a noisy line, or with a caller
used to phone menus, it's often the one that works.

## When the caller declines

The call carries on. Only the recording stops.

The same is true if the answer can't be understood, or if something goes wrong
during the gate. Every one of those paths ends the same way: **continue the call,
don't record**. The assistant never hangs up on someone for declining.

## What the assistant says

Write your own wording in **consent prompt**. This is one of the few places worth
being exact, because the wording is the point — say who's recording, why, and that
they can decline.

If you leave it empty, a short stock question is used instead, in the assistant's
language. Qall has stock wording in English and German.

<Warning>
  If you leave the consent prompt empty and the assistant's language isn't one
  Qall has stock wording for, **the call is not recorded.** Asking in a language
  the caller may not speak wouldn't be asking, so the recording simply doesn't
  start. Write your own consent prompt for any other language.
</Warning>

A regional language setting falls back to its base language — an Austrian German
assistant uses the German wording.

## Where the answer is kept

The outcome of the consent gate is stored on the call, including when it was
unresolved. So "was this caller asked, and what did they say" is answerable later
from the call itself.

## Turning recording off entirely

Clear **recording enabled** on the assistant. Transcripts and summaries still
work — those come from the live conversation, not from the audio file.

Text conversations are never recorded.

## Telling callers they're talking to a machine

Being open about the assistant being an assistant is a prompt instruction, not a
setting. Put it in the first message or the opening line:

```text theme={null}
## Who you are
You are Mara, an AI assistant answering for Elster Hotels. Say so in your first
sentence.
```

Keep it in the [first message](/assistants) if you want the exact wording spoken
every time, rather than left to the assistant to phrase.

<Note>
  This page describes what the product does. Whether recording or disclosure is
  required where you operate, and what wording satisfies it, is a question for
  your own legal advice.
