# Going live

> A checklist before real callers reach your assistant.

Work down this before you point a real number at an assistant.

## The assistant

<Steps>
  <Step title="The prompt says what it cannot do">
    And what happens instead — transfer, take a message, offer a callback. An
    assistant that doesn't know its limits promises things you have to undo.
  </Step>

  <Step title="The first message is right, in the right language">
    It's spoken verbatim. Read it out loud once.
  </Step>

  <Step title="There's a way out">
    A [transfer](/tools/call-transfers) to a human, or at least an end-call tool.
    Never leave a caller with no exit.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Idle handling is on">
    Set an idle timeout. Without one, a caller who walks away holds the line open.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## The data

<Steps>
  <Step title="Outcomes are assigned">
    They only record on assistants you assign them to. Going live without them
    means a week of calls you can't analyse. See [Outcomes](/outcomes).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Knowledge is attached and processed">
    Attached, showing **completed**, and in **search** mode unless you meant
    otherwise.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Recording and consent are what you intend">
    Including the consent wording in every language you take calls in. See
    [Recording and consent](/guides/recording-and-consent).
  </Step>
</Steps>

## The phone side

<Steps>
  <Step title="The number is assigned">
    To the right assistant. See [Phone numbers](/phone-numbers).
  </Step>

  <Step title="The connection shows ready">
    Not "incomplete". Run setup again if it isn't.
  </Step>

  <Step title="You have called it yourself">
    From a mobile, not a browser. See [Testing](/guides/testing).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Transfer destinations answer">
    Ring each one. A transfer to a number nobody picks up is worse than no
    transfer.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## The account

<Steps>
  <Step title="There is credit on the account">
    And auto-recharge is on if you don't want to watch it. See
    [Organisation](/organisation).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Your own provider keys are in, if you are using them">
    See [Integrations](/integrations).
  </Step>

  <Step title="The right people have access">
    And anyone who only needs to read calls is a **viewer**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## The first day

Don't walk away from it.

**Read the first twenty calls in full.** Not the summaries — the transcripts. You
will find two or three things no amount of testing would have shown you, because
real callers say things you wouldn't think to try.

**Watch what callers ask for that the assistant can't do.** That list is your next
week of work, and it's the most valuable thing you get from going live.

**Check your outcomes are being filled in sensibly.** A vague description shows up
as inconsistent values across calls.

If something is badly wrong, unassign the number. The assistant stops answering
immediately and you can put the old routing back.
